Joanna Kahumbu

Joanna Kahumbu is an Associate at ALN Kenya | Anjarwalla & Khanna and a member of the Dispute Resolution department. She advises on a wide array of complex civil and commercial matters in litigation, arbitration, and international trade law.

Joanna is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a member of the Law Society of Kenya. She holds a Bachelor of Laws from Strathmore University, and a Master of Laws in International Trade and Investment Law from the University of the Western Cape where she attended as a Mandela Rhodes Scholar, 2024.

• Successfully defending for Vodafone Group and related entities in connection with a public interest suit valued at approximately USD 2.5 billion filed at the High Court Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division, Nairobi, by shareholders and users of the world-famous Mpesa mobile money platform jointly developed by Safaricom in relation to compensation sought for alleged misappropriation of funds.
• Advising a large South Africa based private equity fund in connection with the recovery of an equity investment valued at over USD 3.5 million following substantiation of fraudulent misrepresentation.
• Representing Mastercard International before the Supreme Court of Kenya against the Kenya Revenue Authority in connection with the erroneous application of withholding tax on certain fees as well as the erroneous classification of certain payments as royalties.
• Advising Tatu City in connection with an international arbitration at the ICC in relation to a construction dispute with a Kenyan contractor over a FIDIC Redbook 1999 governed construction contract, with claims of over USD 5.1 million.
• Advising International Planned Parenthood Federation, a non-profit organisation that offers reproductive healthcare globally, in connection with various queries on compliance with Employment law in Kenya, including but not limited to redundancy procedures and processes, disciplinary proceedings and investigations.
• Advising a large South Africa based financial service provider in connection with a complex restructuring and loan authorisation.
• Acting for a high-net-worth client in connection with matrimonial proceedings relating to child custody and maintenance, divorce and matrimonial property proceedings filed in various courts.
• Advising various clients in connection with local and international arbitration law issues.
