On 30 April 2026, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) announced the completion of the River Niger crossing of the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline, marking a significant milestone in the pipeline project and Nigeria’s gas transmission network.  This development follows the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline River Niger crossing in June 2025.

The OB3 Pipeline

The OB3 gas pipeline is a 130-kilometre pipeline designed to deliver up to 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day from the Obiafu-Obrikom gas plant in Rivers State to the Oben node in Edo State. It serves as the critical interconnector linking the eastern gas network to the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) in the west and the AKK pipeline in the north.

Construction of the OB3 pipeline commenced in 2012, with an original completion target of 2017. The project experienced significant delays, primarily due to the technical complexity of the River Niger crossing, which stalled progress for over seven years. The AKK pipeline faced similar challenges at its own River Niger crossing before its successful completion in June 2025.
