Role Overview
The successful candidate will advise clients on a broad spectrum of indirect tax matters across Kenya and the region, including customs, VAT, excise and trade compliance. The role entails providing regulatory and transactional advice, supporting clients during audits, investigations, dispute resolution processes, assisting in the negotiation of customs and tax rulings with the relevant authorities.

Location
The role will be based in Nairobi, Kenya. With potential for travel across our regional offices.

Roles and Responsibilities
We are seeking a high calibre professional to join our Tax department. The role will report to the Tax Partners.

  • Advise clients on customs and excise duty matters, import/export procedures, tariff classification, valuation, rules of origin, and trade facilitation under EAC and international trade frameworks.
  • Provide end-to-end VAT advisory services, including registration, compliance, filings, recovery mechanisms and dispute management.
  • Represent clients in customs and VAT audits, investigations, and appeals before the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and relevant tribunals.
  • Track and interpret legislative developments in customs, excise and VAT law, advising clients proactively on compliance risks and opportunities.
  • Act as the primary liaison between clients and regulatory or revenue authorities.
  • Conduct research and provide insights on customs and tax issues to strengthen clients’ technical and industry understanding.
  • Advise clients on compliance risks and provide recommendations to reduce tax related risks.
  • Advising clients on tax-efficient restructurings, interpreting complex legislative and regulatory actions relating to corporate and partnership transactions.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, delivering tailored customs and tax solutions to meet their specific needs.
  • Assisting clients with regulatory and legislative initiatives and prepare for client review submission requests for private letter rulings and technical advice from the Tax authorities.

The following qualifications and experience are preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related field.
  • 4-5 years of Customs experience, ideally with Big 4 audit firms/ Law Firms or equivalent, revenue authorities and/or in-house multinational settings.
  • Strong technical and commercial expertise, with a keen interest in further developing both areas of knowledge.
  • Professional qualifications such as CPA, ACCA, or equivalent are an added advantage.
  • Member of the Bar will be an added advantage.
