Justice Defenders believes everyone deserves a fair hearing. They train paralegals and lawyers within Kenyan prisons to provide legal services for themselves and others, protecting their rights and addressing their wrongs. They have two streams of work: a legal education programme that offers inmates scholarships to study with the University of London and after graduation offer legal services in prison; and a legal practice programme that runs legal offices in prisons, training paralegals to provide legal services to their fellow prisoners.

In 2020 they helped over 5,000 clients across ten prisons. ALN Kenya helps to document their work, provided masks during the pandemic to keep prisoners safe and our pro bono team are restructuring the organisation’s governance structure to ensure efficiency and compliance with the law. We have also been helping to produce a documentary about their work to encourage more support and funding.
