  1. Background

    Hanna leads Taza Legal’s Mining and Natural Resources Practice. She advises local and international clients on mining, oil and gas, corporate and commercial matters, with particular experience in regulatory compliance, investment structuring, licensing, and natural resources governance. Hanna also advises mining companies, investors, development organisations and public institutions on complex legal, commercial and policy matters across Ethiopia’s extractive industries.

    Hanna is recognised for her contribution to Ethiopia’s mining and natural resources sector. During her tenure at the Ministry of Mines, she received the Ministerial Award for Best Contributing Employee in 2021 and 2022 in recognition of her role in advancing the Ministry’s strategic objectives and institutional development.

    She combines public-sector regulatory experience with private-practice expertise, bringing a unique perspective to clients operating in Ethiopia’s extractive industries, infrastructure and investment sectors.

  2. Career Highlights
    • Negotiating eight gold, marble and potash mining agreements and nine coal mining agreements on behalf of the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines, and briefing the Council of Ministers on licence endorsement and approval.
    • Developing the inception document and partnership arrangements for the Ethio-Mines Development Center at Addis Ababa University Institute of Technology.
    • Leading negotiations for a dual master’s degree programme between the Ministry of Mines and the University of Colorado School of Mines.
    • Advising leading international mining companies and investors in Ethiopia on exploration, licensing, investment structuring and regulatory compliance.
    • Advising mining drilling companies, including Kluane Drilling, on incorporation and regulatory compliance.
    • Advising tantalum and lithium exporters, including Zehab Investment and Grand New Energy LLC.
    • Leading the merger and acquisition of a Dutch agricultural company valued at over ETB 158 million.
    • Advising a Dutch flower farm valued at approximately EUR 26 million in connection with an expropriation matter.
    • Advising on the establishment and operationalisation of INGOs and chambers of commerce, including the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Ethiopia.
