SEACOM’s Role in Connecting East Africa’s Growth
As the first undersea cable to bring high-speed internet access to East Africa, ALN Kenya acted for Seacom in connection with the East African portion of its development of the USD 650 million, 17,000 kilometres undersea fibre optic cable stretching from India to France through Mozambique, Madagascar, Kenya and Tanzania, including advising on Landing Station Lease Agreements, the selling of IRUs (Indefeasible Rights of Use) and option agreements.
SEACOM launched Africa’s first broadband submarine cable system along the continent’s Eastern and Southern coasts in 2009. Today SEACOM is the preferred partner for African businesses, network carriers, and service providers. This was the first undersea cable to bring high-speed internet access to East Africa, and it has gone live, which is an important deal given the internet’s importance.
