ALN Director, Karim Anjarwalla moderated the session which discussed the trends and opportunities shaping the local markets in East Africa and what 2024 has in store for the region. On the panel, Karim was joined by Chief Economist & Head of ALM | NCBA Group, Raphael Agung’ and Head of Global Operational Risk Research | Fitch Solutions, Chiedza Madzima.

ALN, with partners UNCTAD, The Flip Flopi Project, McKinsey & Company and Delterra, is hosting an informal pre-event to the 3rd Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastics (INC-3), to discuss trade and development aspects of plastic pollution mitigation measures, non-plastic substitutes, and plastic alternatives.

Workshop for East and West African Communicators on Circular Economy

Significant knowledge and empirical evidence is produced in technical assistance projects focusing on the practical implementation and innovation around environmental goods and services towards more circular production and trade systems.  To enhance impact and knowledge related to applied circular economy projects under the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) Programme, and to empower civil society audiences with knowledge to drive systemic change, UNCTAD and Africa 21 have decided to join forces to deliver capacity building and targeted training activities for journalists and communicators based in East and West Africa.  The initiative is also co-sponsored by UNESCO. 

Re-Thinking the Future of Single Use Plastics

Global levels of plastic pollution are showing no signs of slowing down. Recent UNCTAD figures show plastics trade reaching USD 1.2 trillion in 2022. Despite a surge in public awareness and environmental campaigning, a recent report shows that the world is producing a record amount of single-use plastic waste, generating 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste in 2021, 6 million metric tons more than in 2019.
